  • First minted in 1967 to be circulated as gold currency and created as a low price gold bullion coin that virtually anyone could own.
  • The Krugerrand Gold Coin’s purity is 91.667%/.917. Its composition is 91.667% gold and 8.33% copper, making it more durable as circulated currency.
  • They were given a face value and minted as legal tender so that they could be imported to other countries, such as the US because ownership of gold was prohibited but ownership of foreign coins was allowed.
  • With over 46 million ounces in circulation today, the Krugerrand Gold Coin is the most widely owned bullion coin in the world.
  • The name Krugerrand comes from President Paul Kruger (Kruger) and the unit of currency (Rand).
  • Being the first coin to contain precisely 1oz of fine gold, the Krugerrand Gold Coin set the trend in gold bullion coins with the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and the American Gold Eagle soon following in 1979 and 1986 respectively.
  • Originally only minted in one size, fractional sizes of the Krugerrand were issued in 1980 with ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz gold coins.
  • The obverse of the coin features Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic and South Africa inscribed in both Afrikaans and English.
  • The reverse of the coin features one of the national symbols of South Africa, the springbok. Inscribed on the reverse is “Krugerrand” across the top, the year across the middle and “Fyngoud 1oz fine gold” along the bottom of the coin.
